What To Do if You’ve Found a Stray Pet
If you find a stray pet in the Albuquerque area, you should try to determine if it needs medical attention. This Animal Welfare Officers determine the best next steps for the stray. Please do not put yourself, or the animal, in danger when trying to assist.
“I found a healthy stray pet”
- If you’ve found a healthy stray pet, call non-emergency city services at 311.
- If the shelter is open (7 a.m. – 7 p.m.), drop the pet at an Eastside or Westside CABQ Animal Welfare location
- If the shelter is not open and you are able to, hold the animal until you are able to drop it off after 7 a.m. If it is after 7 p.m., call an Animal Welfare Officer at (505) 242-2677.

“I found an injured stray pet”
- If the pet you found is injured, please call 311 to report it to Animal Control. Then, wait with the pet for Animal Welfare Officers. Finally, they may advise that you drop the pet at an Eastside or Westside CABQ Animal Welfare location.
- As the City of Albuquerque’s Animal Welfare’s Division ER Veterinarian, Route 66 Veterinary ECCC will treat an injured only stray animal for the City of Albuquerque between 7 p.m. – 7 a.m.
